In layman's terms, a "punch" is the same as punching-in or punching-out of an old-style punchclock machine. It signifies the beginning or ending of a specific activity at work. For example, employees often "punch in" at the beginning of the day and "punch out" just before going home. Other companies may ask that they punch-in to an activity, such as lunch, while still other companies may ask their employees to note down the name of the project they were working on.
